JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Health and Safety Manager is a proactive role supporting Canary Wharf Group in ensuring the highest standards of health and safety (H&S) in all construction activities. The Assistant Health and Safety Manager plays a key role in implementing and maintaining H&S policies & procedures, conducting inspections and play a crucial role in ensuring health and safety is embedded in everything we do. This role is predominantly on-site and working from home on a regular basis is not possible.

Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.3pm (site based).

Salary up to £45,000 p.a. dependent on experience.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Health and Safety team in the implementation of the CWCL safety management systems and help to ensure legal compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of construction sites, equipment and work practices to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM).
  • Collaborate with the CWCL site team, trade contractors and workers to address identified hazards and implement corrective actions to mitigate risks.
  • Provide guidance and support to site personnel on health and safety policies, procedures and best practices, including toolbox talks and safety inductions.
  • Assist in investigating accidents, incidents and near misses, and prepare detailed reports with recommendations for preventive measures and improvements.
  • Maintain accurate records of health and safety activities, including inspection reports, training sessions and incident investigations.
  • Stay updated on relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and industry best practices, and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Assist in liaising with regulatory authorities and external auditors during site inspections and audits.
  • To attend formal training sessions/courses and to undertake self-study as required to fulfil the role and to progress.
  • Work closely with other departments within the Canary Wharf Group to ensure that health and safety considerations are integrated into all aspects of construction projects.
  • Collaborate with the Health and Safety management department to share best practices, coordinate initiatives, and ensure consistency in health and safety standards across Canary Wharf.
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Senior Health and Safety Managers, Project Executive,Associate Director for Health and Safety and Director Health Safety and Wellbeing.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • At least one year of experience in a health and safety role within the construction industry with a solid understanding of construction processes and hazards.
  • Sound knowledge of UK health and safety legislation, regulations, and standards, including CDM regulations.
  • NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety or equivalent qualification (NVQ Level 3) is essential.
  • Working towards becoming a member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
  • Possess a practical, proactive approach to Health and Safety management.
  • Have good communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Experience in conducting risk assessments, accident investigations and implementing corrective actions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with site personnel, subcontractors and colleagues across different departments.
  • Have the ability to develop and implement Health and Safety performance related systems and procedures where required.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
